September DePauw Alumni News
##SENDGRIDOPENTRACKING##

The Development and Alumni Engagement Division is happy to announce the additions of Christian Shuck and Al Smith to the team.

Christian started his position at DePauw as associate vice president for development in mid-July of this year. He came to campus with over 10 years of experience in fundraising for higher education, as well as political fundraising and advocacy. He most recently served as a major gifts officer and assistant campaign director at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Christian is a Greencastle native with strong family ties to DePauw including his wife, Alia, who is a DePauw alumna from the Class of 2007.

In his spare time Christian prefers to be learning, from subject ranging from gardening to historical architecture. He is an avid science fiction fan but is just as happy connecting with nature on a hike.

"I grew up on DePauw's campus, and I was afforded opportunities at a young age because of the programs the university made open to the broader community. After reading the strategic plan, meeting with campus partners and hearing President White speak about the Bold and Gold Strategic Plan, I had to come home to be a part of this significant time in DePauw's history. I'm very much looking forward to helping the university maintain its status as a leading educational institution in the liberal arts and sciences."

Al (Alisa) Smith has recently joined DePauw University's Development and Alumni Engagement team, commencing her role as associate vice president for annual giving and alumni engagement on July 31st.

Prior to joining DePauw, Al held positions at esteemed institutions including the University of Illinois Chicago College of

Medicine, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and DePaul University.

Hailing from Maine, Al embarked on her own higher education journey at Central

Maine Vocational Technical Institute, eventually earning degrees from Wright State University, the School Of the Art Institute of Chicago, and DePaul University.

Her dedication to continuous learning is evident as she recently achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Innovation and Design Thinking from Emeritus, in collaboration with Columbia Business School, Dartmouth, and MIT. Al firmly believes that education is a perpetual journey without a predetermined end. She looks forward to continually expanding her knowledge, driven by her dedication to serving both the university and the larger community.

"I look forward to being a strategic and innovative partner to further the mission at DePauw."

Philanthropy in Action

Crandall legacy supports professorships, scholarship, School of Business and Leadership

Albert Edwin Crandall ’56 and his wife Bertha Louise Woods Crandall ’50 were longtime supporters of DePauw. For many years, the Crandalls contributed at the Named Scholar level, and enjoyed meeting with students who benefited from The Fund for DePauw Scholarships they helped provide. The Crandalls were deeply influenced by their DePauw experience, especially by the university’s great professors. They left an estate gift of more than $5 million to endow two professorships, a need-based scholarship fund at DePauw University, as well as support for the university’s new School of Business and Leadership. The sponsors of the concert were Charles Ballinger ‘57 and his wife Venita. However, neither Martin nor Charles knew each was a DePauw alumnus until after the concert when they met for the first time.
