#OneTeamDePauw and Monon Bell!
##SENDGRIDOPENTRACKING##

Dear Alumni and Friends,

💛 I LOVE DEPAUW 💛.  As I’ve watched our campus come alive at the start of this academic year, there is much to be thankful for and celebrate. Our students remain engaged in a wide variety of campus activities, and organizations and employees, both new and returning, bring a new energy to our relationships with each other and students.  We are championing a revitalized DePauw under our Bold and Gold 2027 Strategic Plan and Tiger Pride is high. At time of this post, we’ve engaged with more than 540 donors and raised $210,000 in our #OneTeamDePauw Giving Campaign. The campaign allows us to live our athletics mission to provide nationally competitive athletics opportunities for our student-athletes.

Make a Gift!

For my colleagues in athletics we begin at a quick pace in August and by September, all 23 teams and 600 student-athletes are engaged in practice and competition. Building on tradition, striving for excellence and adapting to challenges, I’m grateful to work alongside our coaches and athletics staff who prioritize belonging, well-being, growth and success. We are TeamDePauw, with eyes to the same goals, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, political view or language; that’s the beauty of playing sports. Our student-athletes strive for success, practice discipline and teamwork, demonstrate accountability to others, and learn to communicate through challenges. Athletics at DePauw unifies our students, alumni, employees and fans through Tiger Pride and the love of a place so many of us consider home.

This past Saturday, tradition and Tiger Pride took center stage as our volleyball team hosted the NCAC conference championship tournament, our men’s and women’s cross country teams ran in the NCAA regionals and our football team played in the 129th Monon Bell game. On Saturday, you didn’t have to be an “athlete” to be engaged … you simply needed to love your DePauw experience so much that you wanted today’s generation to have a transformative and memorable experience for themselves.

While our volleyball team and men’s cross country team did not advance, I’m proud to share that our women’s cross country team tied for first in their regional and will head to the NCAA national championships this Saturday in Carlisle, PA. I’m also proud to share that our football team experienced a thrilling, double overtime win in the Monon Bell game completing an undefeated regular season, and is preparing to head to Alma College for the first round of the NCAA championships. I’m absolutely amazed by our student-athletes and both proud to work alongside our coaches and athletics staff.  #TeamDePauw for the win!

Be part of the TeamDePauw momentum because of your love for DePauw and Tiger Pride, and watch our student-athletes and coaches strive for excellence. Wear your Tiger gear proudly on Saturday, November 18, and be part of TeamDePauw.

Philanthropy in Action

Herrick E.H. Greenleaf Chair of Computer Science

In July, Professor Scott Thede was named the Herrick E.H. Greenleaf Chair of Computer Science. He plans to use the associated funding to revitalize his research work in artificial intelligence and parallel programming and possibly to prepare new courses to support the curriculums of DePauw's new schools.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to be named the Herrick E.H. Greenleaf Chair of Computer Science; it will make a big difference in my scholarship and teaching. The Computer Science Founders

Fund for Excellence has also impacted my teaching, by providing resources for our students to work on senior projects and attend conferences.”

The Herrick E. H. Greenleaf Chair in Computer Science was established by Timothy H. Ubben and Sharon Williams Ubben, both members of the Class of 1958, as part of The Campaign for DePauw: Leadership for a New Century. The Greenleaf Chair was named  for the late Herrick E. H. Greenleaf, who taught at DePauw from 1921 to 1964. The Herrick E.H. Greenleaf Chair provides recognition for a current faculty member in the Department of Computer Science whose teaching and contributions to the profession are exemplary.

Celebrating the life of Trustee Norval Stephens '51

DePauw lost a loyal friend of the university with the recent passing of Norval B. Stephens Jr. ‘51. Stephens passed away at home on October 17, 2023 at the age of 94. He was a tireless and creative figure not only in helping shape life at DePauw University, but also Greek life at a national level and the civic life of Barrington, Illinois, the community he and his wife, Diane Forst Stephens ‘51, called home. Over many decades, Norval and Diane have given their time and treasure to our university. They are Washington C. DePauw Lifetime Society members.

In 1994, Stephens was awarded the Old

Gold Goblet, DePauw’s most prestigious alumni award. Years prior, he received a Rector Achievement Award. As an alumnus, he served on the Board of Trustees beginning in 1983 in a voting role and continuing in advisory and lifetime roles. He was also a member of the Board of Visitors, Alumni Board and Reunion Planning Committee. As a student, Stephens was a Rector Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, president of Delta Tau Delta and participated in many facets of campus life.
