##SENDGRIDOPENTRACKING##

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As we head into the second half of the spring term and begin to turn our thoughts toward Commencement 2023 it is my pleasure to provide an update on several academic components of the strategic plan, particularly with respect to the launch of DePauw's new schools.   As described below, we have made significant progress on this work, which is already generating student interest.

As you may know, the faculty have approved the following new majors and minors that will be associated with the new School of Business and Leadership: Finance, Business Analytics and Entrepreneurship (minor). The faculty have also approved the following new majors and minors that will be associated with the new Creative School: Film and Media Arts, Design, and Music Creation and Technology (minor). In addition, the faculty are expected to vote on a new minor in Leadership before the end of the spring term.

We have completed several searches by hiring faculty who will contribute to the new curricular areas including new tenure track faculty in Business Analytics, Choir, Finance, Voice and Film and Media Arts. I am very excited about the faculty members we have hired and know our students will benefit greatly from their contributions. Additionally, searches for an Inaugural Dean for the School of Business and Leadership, as well as an Inaugural Dean for the Creative School, are coming to a close, and I look forward to introducing the new deans in future messages.

Renovations to the first floor of Harrison Hall, which will house the School of Business and Leadership are proceeding on schedule and we look forward to opening the new space for use in the fall 2023 term. The space will include a Case Study Room and a Bloomberg laboratory and we are actively working on plans to integrate Bloomberg software into several courses starting this fall.

While all of this is happening, students are fully engaged in a wide range of courses and co-curricular activities.  Campus feels alive and active and the newly renovated Roy O. West Library is thriving as a focal point of the campus, especially for academic life.  It is a busy, but very exciting, time to be part of the DePauw community and I feel honored to be one of many faculty and staff members who are contributing to this work.  I am also grateful to the many alumni and friends of the University who continue to support our work.

Philanthropy in Action

Nick Horvath '01 Knows Recurring Giving Makes a Big Impact for DePauw Students

Nick Horvath ’01, pictured above with his wife and two children, is a loyal financial supporter of the university through The Fund for DePauw and the recurring giving program. He says he noticed even as a student that “for an institution of higher learning to continue to operate and thrive, the base cost of tuition would not cover key improvements whether they be living quarters, educational lab needs or even student athletic opportunities. These simply would not be feasible without the benefits of charitable contributions of various sizes.”

Nick is giving generously and consistently. “People often see or read about the sizable donations and the buildings that get named in return and think that smaller amounts aren’t beneficial.  But even $100 a month adds up over time and directly benefits the students that attend.  You don’t need to write a massive check to have impact.”

The university has not yet met its goal for The Fund for DePauw this year, and every gift gets us closer to this important milestone we must reach by June 30. When making a gift to DePauw, visit www.depauw.edu/give. Click on “make your gift,” and consider the recurring giving option, which allows you to select a monthly, quarterly, yearly or twice-yearly gift.

Mourning the Loss of Robert R. "Bob" Frederick '48

Bob Frederick '48, a DePauw University lifetime trustee, passed away on March 22, 2023. At DePauw, he was an economics major and a meber of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Bob was a loyal volunteer and leader for DePauw and had been a recipient of the Old Gold Goblet in 1983 and an honorary doctorate in 2001. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 15 at 11:00 at Boca’s Lighthouse Methodist Church. You can read the full obituary here.

Mourning the Loss of Professor Emeritus Vergene Miller

Vergene Miller was a professor of music at DePauw from 1977-2006. She directed many opera’s and sang as a soloist frequently with both the orchestra and the choir. In 1989, she was named Director of Eastern European Studies. That year, following a summer of study in Salzburg Austria, she spent a semester in Vienna where she was in charge of 25 DePauw students. While in Europe, the group traveled frequently including such places as Moscow, Berlin, and Budapest. This was an intense time to be in Europe as the Berlin wall came down while they were staying there. You can read the full obituary here.

Spring Break Off Campus

Environmental Geoscience Students Spend Spring Break in the Desert

DePauw's Department of Geology and Environmental Geoscience offers several field courses in locations with world-class geology. This year’s Field Experiences class spent spring break investigating the geologic history of the desert corridor between Las Vegas and Death Valley. Students used geologic field methods to map the rocks and structures of the area and will compile their findings into a written report by the end of the semester. Professor Tim Cope reports, the class spent most of the week at a geologic field station in the small desert town of Shoshone, California, and each day they hiked through the remote mountain wilderness of the Resting Spring Range.
